Sigrid Rausing is the editor of Granta magazine and the publisher of Granta Books. She is the author of two previous books: History, Memory, and Identity in Post-Soviet Estonia, and Everything is Wonderful, which was short-listed for the Royal Society of Literature Ondaatje Prize. She has a PhD in Anthropology from University College London, and is an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics and St Antony’s College, Oxford. She lives in London with her husband, film and theatre producer Eric Abraham.

There is nothing salacious about Sigrid Rausing’s memoir MAYHEM as I half expected it to be. In fact, the author approaches the very sad, very destructive story of her brother’s wife’s death as well as her brother’s story with dignity, searching for answers. Her brother Hans is a drug addict. To say recovering would be stretching the truth. He has been in and out of rehab his entire life. He met his wife in rehab. She, too, was in and out of rehab. Shortly before she died, they had both come out of separate facilities. They had been married for 20 plus years, with four children, who were no longer under their care. The author, through the court, had custody of them. This became a bone of contention. But Hans and Eva were in no position to raise children, given that they were both heroin addicts.Hans was in his London townhouse, doing some drug of choice, when he noticed that his wife, who had a heart condition, dropped to the floor. When he realized that she was dead, he could not come to terms with it. So, instead of alerting anyone, he simply buried her in their bedroom under some things. For what appeared to have been a couple of months.Sigrid and Hans’ family come from extreme wealth. Their great-grandfather invented the folding milk container. Eva’s family is also well off. They are set for life in terms of cash. As far as Hans’ mental stability, that is something that Sigrid has been trying to understand for some time. She has reached out to her brother on numerous occasions, even had him live with her, before either of them were married, in an attempt to help him. She also did her best with Eva. To no avail. There was no way she was going to turn her back on their children.There is no way that death by drugs can have a happy ending. For their young children, the heartache of losing their parents must be unimaginable. First, they lost both parents to drugs and then again, one to death. The cruelest form of abandonment.

The author’s father started several successful companies; by most accounts, he amassed over a billion in assets. Sigrid Rausing, one of his daughters, is a successful woman herself, currently the owner and editor of Granta magazine and publisher of Granta books.In this memoir, she writes of her brother and sister-in-law’s addiction to drugs and alcohol. Her brother, Hans married Eva—they are wealthy too, and their story reinforces the maxim that addiction doesn’t discriminate by race, creed or wealth.Both Eve and Hans ran the gambit in treatment protocol –however, by the time of their last relapse, they “had stopped going to 12-step meetings. They let go of solidarity with other addicts; they became funders of addiction causes instead, flattered and praised, like all philanthropists.”Rausing often focuses on the supportive family, themselves abusers of mind-altering chemicals at times—while trying to help, they were at times “walking on eggshells, setting new boundaries that were broken again and again.” The family’s good deeds were sometimes a “cover-up” for their “distress.” (“I covered up how distressed I was and hid my panic attacks – time and time again I thought I was dying, my mouth numb, my mind faint with anxiety.”)Rausing discusses the complexities of addiction. Is addiction genetic or environmental? But, this is not a self-help book, rather the author exposes the pain and suffering she (and other family members) endured as they watched loved ones digress into the abyss of addiction—not from afar, but up close.Her writing skills are obvious and heartfelt—she knows that trust between the addict and helper is critical for recovery (“a definition of hell is a lack of trust,”) and has learned there are limitations and necessary boundaries between the two. Rausing writes a compelling memoir that is truthful, sad, and important.

Got better the more I read and could relate to some of the challenge faced and intense window into the struggles of a family to save its own.

The tragic story is ruined by pose that tries too hard to be art, and tries too hard to not pass judgement.

This is an excellent book: a quiet and extremely thoughtful account of a topic that courts melodrama and squalor. I thought it was remarkable. I am not surprised to see negative reviews here, though - it is very much _not_ the sensationalist book about addiction that some readers will have wanted. The writing is understated but superb, in my opinion. There are no answers, and the book is honest about that!
