NOTE to KINDLE READERS. There have been comments that the stories were dated. The hardcover edition was originally published in 2010. It's the Kindle version that just showed up. The original publication date is plainly stated on the Amazon website, so it's worth it to check the date before buying. I run into this occasionally when I have read a given book five years ago, order the Kindle edition and then discover I've already read it, But gee, it's Gaiman and Martin et all, for a buck 99, so what's to complain about?
A very cool anthology that both hews to and plays with the loose prompt of apocalypse. The sheer variety of ways that the world might end offers a kind of postmodern delight as much as a gnawing discomfort. I was surprised with the level of language - there's so much great writing in here. Don't just read the stories by the famous standouts - the lesser known writers in this anthology are so great and refreshing and exciting. I especially loved Lucius Shepard and Nancy Kress and Robert Silverberg.A great book to read in small chunks. I also liked the chapter groupings - it was nice to have the option of which variety of apocalypse story I wanted to try with each sitting.
As with any collection of stories, some landed poorly and some landed well. If nothing else, read the last one. They definitely saved the best for last. (All the stories are completely unconnected, so you can read them in any order you like, and skip to the next, if one doesn't capture you.)
This collection is creatively laid out in main sections that provide the reader with a clear taxonomy: Bang or Whimper, The Last Man, Life After the End, Dark - Distant Futures, and Witnesses to the End of the World. It features quality writers that come at the 'Apocalypse' from varied viewpoints. Also interesting is the span in the dates of publication of the stories ranging from 1944 to 2007 - it was interesting to read an individual entry and try to place it in the approximate year it was written. I had read Salvador, Salvage, and Dark, Dark Were the Tunnels in other books but this did not detract from my overall enjoyment. Standouts included: The Underdwellar (classic with a twist), Lucifer (pathetically longing for the past), The Wheel (reminiscent of The Lottery), and Flight to Forever (entertaining homage to The Time Machine). A solid collection.
These collections serve the purpose of sampling the genre authors before diving in a with hundred bucks into the authors epic size works.The read itself is not a whole. Some aren't that good. It's like a long, old SyFy mag collection.
Okay, not a lot of memorable stories. Some were either too edgy or to cerebral to stand on their own. Not a bad purchase for 99¢. Not worth a penny more.
Some good stories I had never read along with a couple of well known ones. I particularly enjoyed the closing story by Poul Anderson, I just re evaluated his work and I’m separating some for reading in the future.
I enjoyed the book, especially the variety of stories, authors and subject matter. Would give it a 5 if some stories weren't a little flat, but thats to be expected in an anthology. I truly love anthologies, and this is one of the best.
