Amazon.com Review
To the Hopi Indians in America's Southwest, our existence will soon become koyaanissqatsi or "a world out of balance." Some doomsday theorists, like historian Edward Tenner, argue we are already there. But unlike many of his colleagues, Tenner doesn't believe technology is causing the world's demise--rather, it is carrying us, as individuals, to our own koyaanissqatsi more quickly. Technological "breakthroughs" such as X-rays and computers have their immediate benefits, but their long-term consequences in terms of health and environmental risks, lost time, and disintegration of traditions set us back further than where we started in the first place. While Tenner doesn't damn technology, he cautions for modest and skeptical acceptance of it.

From Publishers Weekly
Even when used to better the world, technology fosters unforeseen, often unpleasant consequences that Tenner calls "revenge effects." For example, air-conditioned subways raise platform temperatures by as much as 10 degrees F; some computer users get painful, wrist-numbing carpal tunnel syndrome; flood control systems encourage settlement of flood-prone areas, inviting disaster; 6% of all hospital patients become infected with microbes they encounter during their stay. In a thought-provoking study, Tenner, a historian of science and visiting researcher at Princeton, looks at revenge effects that pop up in medicine, sports, the computerized office and the environment. Oil spills, erosion of beaches, back injuries, athletes' illegal use of steroids and mass extermination of bird species on the world's islands by ship-hopping rats mark this saga of bewildering, often frustrating change. Tenner's cautionary conclusion: revenge effects demand ingenuity and brainpower as technology continues to replace life-threatening problems with slower-acting, more persistent ones. This book may be a bit dated as it doesn't cover any 21st Century technology, but it is an excellent review of the unexpected consequences that arose from various technologies up that point. Many of the outcomes are things we are all aware of, some good and some bad, but all significant. The depth of research and the span of history covered by this book makes it a must read as far as I am concerned.
The best things about this book were the chapters on environmental disasters and invasive species. Those are the bits which have really stuck with me since I read the book. In general, there are some really great anecdotes in here, and it should appeal to the gloom-and-doom monger among your family or set of friends. It doesn't quite live up to its claims as a book-- Tenner is better at the anecdotes than in making the connection between them. The "why" in the title is never really delivered. And unfortunately his writing style is a tad on the dry side, so I actually kind of wanted a "why" as a payoff for getting through the book. Oh well. I can still imagine there are quite a few people for whom this is exactly the thing.
Edward Tenner has written an amazing book dealing with unintended consequences of technology. The book probably would have received five stars if it was available in a more up to date version and/or more individual technologies had been explored (hopefully 'Our Own Devices', his newest book will rectify both points). A revised edition would be most welcome. (For instance in the section on computers the Pentium chip had just been released.)Tenner's gift is in his ability to take very complex subjects with a myriad of unseen interactions and to explain the outcomes in a logical, readable and comprehensive manner. This would be an excellent book to use in a systems safety course, along with James Chiles' 'Inviting Disaster,' which is also an excellent read. The ability to explain revenge effects, reverse revenge effects and the like on a number of diverse subjects from sports medicine to forest fire prevention makes this a must read for safety professionals, as well as making it fascinating reading for anyone with an interest in the world as it interacts with technology.
A terrific book for those who are interested in why new technology often fails to meets its expectations.
A little bit dated but an interesting look at the potential and proven consequences of technological changes. Discusses many examples of unforeseen consequences both in nature and of machine
very interesting perspective on technology... love this stuff. Very well researched book with a lot of bibliography so I can check out some of the primary sources
Yet another purchase made for my husband. He loves analytical books and very much enjoyed reading this. Would recommend to anyone who enjoys these types of reads.
Learned a lot! Good read!
