As a teacher of English as a Second Language, I often have students asking me about slang. There are no really good websites that I have found on the topic--most of them are outdated or provide words that are not really used, or are not really slang, and many of them try to be "kid friendly," which slang is generally not. So, I tell generally tell my students to watch movies, listen to music, and use urbandictionary.com.But for those who really are interested in learning slang, and don't mind crude topics (I mean, there is a whole chapter on masturbation) I now recommend this book as well. Although published in 1996, it strikes me as not very dated. There are, of course, some words that are no longer used, as well as others that have come in to the language, and there will be considerable variation based on one's geography. But I give it 5 starts instead of 4 simply because it is as good as I would expect a book on slang to be. It is written in an entertaining manner, has example sentences, defines the meaning of the slang, and for the most part contains entries that are quite relevant and accurate.
Sterling Johnson's tongue-in-cheek book aims to teach the art of American English profanity to non-native speakers of the language. It meets what the author claims is a pressing need for them to understand and produce colloquial profanity. Without these language skills one cannot master the full range of English expression and will miss subtle but important nuances of conversation. Worse, an untrained nonnative speaker will be unable to deliver well-targeted invective in situations where it is not only appropriate, but necessary to do so.Either you already know the words and phrases the book covers or you don't. I won't review them specifically. In either case, look forward to an entertaining and accurate guide to angry English. The author has fun with example sentences, names of speakers, and pointed advice about soft-ball swearing to avoid like the [...] plague. (He's had an effect on me.) There is also some discussion of whether Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is an actual name or a sophomoric pseudonym. You will need to make up your own mind. It's light reading with just the right irreverence for its topic. If you are not the Church Lady, give it a look.
I bought this as a fun gift for a female language teacher, but ended up feeling very uneasy giving it as a gift. Of course the book is going to cover vulgar words (that's the point!), but it goes into a lot of detail on sexual ones. For example, in addition to talking about uses like "f*ck you," it talks about the act of f*cking, different ways to f*ck, and vulgar terms for body parts involved.Obviously you're not going to buy this book for your ultra-Puritan friends in the first place, but just be careful buying this for professional colleagues. It really holds nothing back.
The print is off center on the cover and all the pages in the book. The text is slanted, causing sentences to be cut off, throughout the book. Quite a disappointment as I was giving this as chirstmas present. It looks like it was printed by my sister's kindergarten class.
I got this to give a visiting guest who spoke little English, kind of as a joke. It was WAY too naughty and vulgar for that purposes (I couldn't even read it myself). I am positively NOT a prude, in fact fall near-into the "vulgar" category myself, but... I couldn't go there. My 20-something sons found it very entertaining, as did their friends, and much of the book was read aloud at assorted parties, so it wasn't a dead loss. But it was a tad more extreme than I anticipated.
Be prepared to laugh and ride the humorous wave with Sterling Johnson. In the 1970's, George Carlin cited seven words that would never appear on TV, but time and theatrical productions have changed their acceptability. Unfortunately, I cannot list them in this review because they would not be suitable, but they are listed on page 8 of this book.Cable TV followed the lead when they began showing these R+ rated movies. Language that was not conventional when Carlin clarified what the "bad" words were is now common in conversations. His and Hers, Hands on experience, Tips and Traps are just a few of the sections that provide alternate words for different body parts and actions. Throughout the book, Johnson gives examples through dialogue. The goal is to help the newcomer with a way to understand what f*ck and other derivatives mean, and which ones are fighting words.Writers will find this book is a clear definition of how to write true to life dialogue for today's market.I was expecting a different outlook than definitions of "bad" words, so I was somewhat disappointed. However, this is a valuable resource that is well written and funny.Victoria Tarrani
It took me so long to get rid of my "priate's" moutth
A little less than I expected. Purchased as a gift. Was well recived. Not sure if the the recipient will use it for true language learning but it is a novel gift.
