I am an anthropology major and was taking one of my prerequisite classes that requires this book and it is pretty thorough, a little too thorough. In pretty much every chapter it is fairly important to know what ancient humans and pre-humans ate to understand their ways of life, but after lists and lists of the different species of deer, shellfish, and birds that were eaten, I think the reader is able to surmise a little bit which species ate what in what parts of the world. That is pretty much the only annoying thing about this book. He is just trying to fill his 50-page-per-chapter quota. There is interesting info in here though and I liked how he answered some FAQs at the end of the chapter in-depth.
The Past in Perspective is a book on human and cultural evolution designed for undergraduates with no previous work in archaeology (xx). So, this will introduce plenty of new words in bold font, but usually have them defined for you in the context, either directly or indirectly. There were only a couple of words where I didn't feel it did this. PiP will introduce the human story of evolution essentially to the layman or amateur, then. Though it is technically an archaeology textbook, it didn't quite seem like it. Feder's writing flows well and it's very readable. There are tons of helpful pictures, diagrams, graphs and charts that will help give a picture to what is often being discussed in the text.All in all, this is probably the most readable and enjoyable archaeological textbook I have read (not that I've read a ton, but I have read a few). As I said, this one didn't quite *seem* like a textbook. Feder is capable of bringing difficult issues in the archaeological record and translating them so most readers can understand. He also has a good ability at being fair when comparing and contrasting intra-mural debates within archaeology or anthropology. I paid around eighty dollars for this a few years ago and now it looks like you can get it for practically nothing. Guess that's the way textbooks go. I would still recommend this edition if you don't want to pay so much for the newest one.
The product arrived past the initial due date because of the ongoing hurricanes. Although this shouldn't affect your decision to rent or purchase the book. This is a textbook that my professor wanted us to get for his World Archaeology class. I decided to rent the book instead so the cost benefited my budget. Overall, there are no tears or pages missing. The most interesting part is that the pages are in color not usual black and white.
This was the text for an intro to archaeology course I ended up dropping. Since I'll be signing up for the course again next spring, I decided to read it anyway.Most of my archaeology background comes from books like Lekson's The Architecture of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico (Chaco Canyon Series), Cordell's Prehistory of the Southwest (New World Archaeological Record), and Reed's Chaco's Northern Prodigies: Salmon, Aztec, and the Ascendancy of the Middle San Juan Region after AD 1100 on Ancestral Puebloans (AKA Anasazi or Hisatsinom) in the Four Corners area. So it's good to get a more general background from Feder.Feder weaves recent research into his narrative, making his book as current as books get.He also discusses different methods of dating, and many other techniques that reveal prehistoric cultures.His descriptions of field research in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe make me want to do fieldwork even more, especially after exploring Chacoan Great Houses and Anasazi outliers.A faculty member in West Valley College's Park Management program recommended Renfrew's Archaeology: Theories, Methods and Practice (Fifth Edition) as a more complete text. I haven't read it so I don't know how it compares.Feder's Past in Perspective reads a bit more like a New York Times bestseller than a textbook.His out-of-print Lessons From the Past: An Introductory Reader in Archaeology reprints relatively recent articles about unusual archaeological applications in forensics, and in reconstruction of recent history, like combatant movements during the battle of the Little Bighorn.Both books will give you a general idea of what archaeology is about.
Rented this book for a class. It arrived on time and in good condition. It was fairly interesting, but quite lengthy. If you are really interested in this topic then you would enjoy this book. It provides an in depth look at the development of humans from our origins to ancient civilizations.
Great book for the novice archaeologist or if you're just interested in easy to ready and understand Human Pre-History. This is the second book I've read by Ken Feder and have found his writings very easy and smooth ready. He has a great sense of humor and incorporates it throughout. As I read his works I regret not having applied myself more, in my early years, and considered archaeology as a career or hobby, I might have it I'd read him sooner. Feder makes archaeology and human pre-hisory so interesting. You can't go wrong getting your hands on any of his books.
