Rather than rehashing the reviews of others I will simply make a few observations regarding this well written overview.1) While ostensibly about Homo neanderthalensis, about half the book is devoted to the succession of pre-Neanderthal primate forms, stretching as far back as Australopithecus.2) The volume is well illustrated with black and white photographs and drawings interspersed throughout the text. By contrast, the central section of color photos consists of what appear to be vacation snapshots taken at various European Neanderthal "theme parks". Thus we have life-size models of Neanderthals hunting, cooking, and cavorting in various outdoor settings. Amusing but not all that helpful.3) I bought a used hardcover version of the book, and it is a wonderfully put together example of British publishing - lavish margins, thick paper stock, sewn in signatures, sophisticated type font, etc. It is a joy to handle and read.4) Originally published in 2001, it misses out on the most recent genome analysis suggesting limited interbreeding between Neanderthals and Cro Magnon.
Jordan's tour of the ancient world of the Neanderthals is fairly comprehensive in terms of the topics he covers and the facts he provides. I liked it that he mentioned how many artifacts existed on which any given idea was based, where they came from, dating, and so forth - all with a minimum of jargon. What I didn't like was his often impressionistic style of writing which often bordered on nonsense because the sentence was so long and complex, there was no way of sorting out what exactly he was saying!This is a pretty good book for the average reader who is curious, but not motivated to go too deeply into the topic, but I would suggest also reading Tattersall's "Extinct Humans" for a more accurate perspective on Neanderthal. Jordan draws some un-tenable conclusions and makes them sound like facts when, in fact, they are just speculation, and that is a serious flaw in this book. You can come away from this book with an impression of Neanderthals that is not entirely supported by the facts and data!So, the book has good points and a few weaknesses, though they are not fatal and overall, it is easy enough to read except when you hit the above mentioned rough patches. Recommended as long as you get additional facts from other sources.
Why this human specie didn't make it, that was the motivation to learn more about Neanderthal people. This book was of great help, explaining the story we currently know about Neanderthals and also human evolution, using fossil and in some cases mitochondrial DNA found in different places, mostly in Europe and Asia. The life of these people was hard and difficult, they were predators but also prey, and they managed to make it through for ten of thousands of years until Homo Sapiens started to populate Europe. The fossil bones and skulls of these people tell us that they had marked differences with Homo sapiens but we cannot say much about their skin color or whether they interbreed or not with Homo Sapiens (we also don't know the skin color of those too). In my opinion is very strange that a whole race became extinct and probabilities say that some interbreed must have happened, at least providing the fittest Homo Sapiens of some genes, for instance a white skin color. Australian aborigines have very particular characteristics, but those are dissapearing little by little due to the mixture with other races.This book is great to make you think about how difficult has been for human kind to reach up to this point, all the sufferings of people trying to make their best to survive.
I found this book to be more about the evolutipn of 'Homo' and modern man than providing a lot of information about Neanderthals as I had hoped.Like many such books the authors biases come through loud and clear and he tends to credit modern man with more than he deserves.A little dated for 2017 but I appreciated it for the insight it prompted in myself.
I was very surprised to see that some reviewers consider this book hard to read. I found it very clear and well organized, and most interesting. The writing flows well, the explanations are very good. I liked that the author doesn't waste your time in nebulous theories and farfetched deductions, as some will.There is a great deal of information, more than I thought was available on Neanderthals. Of course, scientific advance have helped to a degree. Anyway, I highly recommend this book to any one with an interest in early man.

It's certainly a book for Neanderthal lovers, like me. The author tries different possibilities of the life of those distant ancestors of ours and the results are arresting. A good read.
Good chronological look at man's evolution at the split from Chimpanzees. A little tedious at times but well researched and very readable. Definitely worth reading.
