This book is not a convoluted conspiracy thriller. Instead, it is a breezy, sit-back-and-relax story perfect for the reader who wants to get away from it all and spend a few hours with colorful characters in a place tourists visit but never really see beyond the surface. Well done!
I just read the revised and re-released version of Bonefish Blues and enjoyed it every bit as much as I did the first time. Mr. Becker is a master at developing characters without detracting at all from the pace of the story. I own both books in the series, and have been waiting a long time for the third installment. Will Service is a guy you just can't help but like, and while trying to be left alone to practice his craft just seems to get drawn in to trouble. With the help of a few close friends and his do it right or don't do it all attitude he manages to come out on top in very entertaining ways. Both times I read the book, I just couldn't put it down until the final page.
This is set in Florida and links boating/fishing and the environment as far as land development and preserving the ecology. I am not into fishing but the narrative about boats and fishing was intersting.The main character is a good guy who prefers to stay on the side line and try to do what is right without drawing attention. The story makes him a reluctant hero not by going it alone but by being the glue so to speak that held others together.This process helps reunite a couple and in the end the good guy sails off into the sunset with the girl. It reminds me of the westerns when I was a kid many years ago.It isn't a complicated plot line but it keeps you interested enough to want to see what happens next.
Revised and Re-releasedOnce again Mr Becker delivers a plot with lots of action with a feeling of urgency that keeps you wondering where it is all going to end. Will Service, his new hero, is very understated and appears to want to work in the background letting others take the lead. A great readI would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced Keys adventure. All of Mr Becker's Series are wonderful stories of the Caribbean and the Keys through the years
Steven Becker has spun a great tail as always with Bonefish Blues. This is a story of a Fly Fishing Guide by the name of Will Service in the Florida Keys who would be most happy if the world would leave him alone to build his house his way and show people the sporting way to catch Tarpon and Bonefish with a fly and a fly pole.It would seem between crooked Real Estate Agents, Mob Enforcers, Competitive Guides and small town building permit people it’s just an uphill fight for poor Will. But Will has got some tricks and a good lady to help him along the way.Good Book Steve!
The plot was interesting and well paced. I particularly liked how his fisherman rival was able to catch so many fish so easily.However, the plot was somewhat jumbled. There were several romantic entanglements that just came in and out and the character point of view in the narrative jumped around. Initially, the narrative viewpoint was Will's for a good portion of the book. Then it seems each of the characters had a viewpoint so the narrative changed from person to person in the latter part of the book.The writing could have been a little tighter but otherwise and enjoyable read.
Mr. Becker has done it again. Being familiar with the Mac Travis series, I had to check this one out. Well worth the read. Will Service is a little different than Mac, but it is a good story. It kicks in from the start and kept my attention trying to figure out what was going to happen next. It has it all: drunk charter boat captains, slimy real estate developers, mean mobsters. What's not to like. If you want to read good, well written stories based in Florida, check out all Mr. Becker's novels. You will not be disappointed.
I almost gave up after the first few pages because the author droned on and on about fishing plus endless boating palaver. Finally started skipping the fishing lectures and the story improved immensely.
