The title of this product indicates that the books are the "foil" covers. They are not. They are the standard product covers. To get the limited edition foil cover versions you have to go to a hobby store.
I received my Book set not sure what to expect after reading the reviews saying that it’s not the foil editions. I am happy to say that yes these are indeed the foil edition of the core rules. That price right now is on sale so the higher quality of the books and be incredibly affordable price.
Nice 10th Printing November 2018 set and DM Screen Reincarnated. Note that foil means standard set, not the limited editions available at game stores. It’s not as glossy as the original but the red part is somewhat more reflective. At $103 and free Prime shipping this can’t be beat.
The foil shine on these is less shiny than I expected but still has some shine too it. They have an almost matte finish which makes them feel and look really nice even when not shining. The price I got this for ($92 before coupons and tax) was very good but looks like it has gone up again ($117). I ended up paying $82 total because of the price drops and coupons which is well under the price of all three books and DM screen combined. Overall I am very happy with this purchase!
Do note this review is for the Special Foil version (Think the standard book covers, but with foil sheen), and not for the Special Edition with the decorated patterns on the covers ( Elaborately filigreed-like Covers).The bundle is nicely designed. Do consider other reviewers when they recommend checking in between the sheets as much as for the exteriors in the chance the items may have suffered abnormal smudges or marks from assembly or packing accidents before the application of the shrink-wrap. Mine came with a few dents INSIDE the case and shrink-wrap (Meaning a book was placed with the defects during manufacturer quality control, and not necessarily caused from shipping), along with an odd pinch-like fold in the upper center near a corner on one side of the hard case as if someone accidentally misplaced a portion of the black dragon layer-sticker, leaving a pinch fold from extra material.Have fun taking risks, learn at your paces, be patient for other people, and remember that the book offers guidelines, not solidly rigid rules. Do what is fair and most fun for everyone in this updated tenth edition. I wish you all excitement in your adventures, and may they lead to growth, resilient friendships, lessons, and fond memories.
I've been wanting to get the core books for a few years now but haven't really wanted to spend 150$ on them so I grabbed them right away when the full new foil set went on sale for $100 (with the screen). Only downside is that the DMG and PHB had little wrinkles (like water damage or something?) on the first 20 or so pages of both books and the MM pages felt like someone placed a pen in the book then shut the cover (not really visible but if you rub your hand across the page it has a little indent like -----u-----). Giving it 4 stars because the imperfections don't make it impossible to read or anything but if the books didn't have them easily 5 stars.
Let me start by saying that this is not the cheapest way to get the core books. You can actually acquire the three books if you purchase them separately. However, this is also no where near the most expensive way to buy the core books.Nor do you get any special artwork found on limited edition printings. You do get foil copies of the normal covers. I can understand some folks being underwhelmed by these, but they are definitely better than the basic books I have held.Print quality seems very good. Through out the books there is full color artwork. Tables and layout make this a very readable edition.The box and screen also are of good quality. I expect them to last for a good while.For good reviews of the information inside I suggest you reference the individual books. Many find 5E to be the best ever edition. I will let you judge for yourself.Bottom line: Do you "need" this edition? Not really. But, this three book foil edition is a nice upgrade from the normal mass printing if you have a few extra dollars to treat yourself.
This is a wonderful set. Having a case to hold everything is great. I would not buy the set unless you can get it for less than the going rate of the individual items as there is nothing particularly special about this version.A note on the finish:I bought a standalone PH the same week I purchased this set. The separate PH has a much glossier finish on the outside of the book and a better texture on the cover. My first reaction was that the set was a cheaper print, but if you had a glossy finish on the set books it would make them MUCH more difficult to get in and out of the case they come in. Food for thought. If you want a shiny gloss, buy the books separately.
