I can relate to this mother's struggle with her son's illness and her fight to find appropriate care for him on many levels. I have worked in two different mental health facilities and have seen this drama played out over and over again in families desperate to find help for loved ones. I also have a son who has battled mental illness, diagnosed at age 19. There are many stories out there but this one offers true hope and resources for anyone desiring to take advantage of the hard work the author has already done. Since reading this book I have approached my grown son about doing the genetic testing in hopes of improving his life. I can so appreciate the "tightrope" she had to walk for so long and I am very moved and touched by her story and the family's willingness to share in hopes of helping others. I think this is amazing science and nothing short of miraculous that she, in her tenacity, was able to find it, apply it, and share with others. I think every psychiatrist in the nation should pick this book up and start looking in the direction of treating disease on the cellular level. Thank you, Diane Borders, from a grateful mom.
This is a must read for anyone touched by mental illness. It is ultimately an empowering story about a mother's struggle to save her son from a terrible condition in spite of a dysfunctional mental health system. Diane Border's strength, courage, and love are as inspiring as her son Daniel's challenges and gifts. The genetic research and discussion of problems with the methylation pathway included in this memoir have a broader message to those suffering from all sorts of illnesses.
This book needs to be required reading for every County Designated Mental Health professional. Every family that has had a mentally ill family member needs to work toward advocating with their legislative representative so this information can multiply hope and healing. Such pain should never be endured, such hope needs to be shouted from every corner and mountain top. Not for the faint of heart to read but press through and you will be glad you did.
This is a fast and painful read if Schizophrenia has touched your life.All the Amazon reviews of this book are excellent. Don't have much new to add except, I hope the reader comesaway remembering the drug Clozapine and The belief that psychotic episodes are physically damaging to the brain.Something that has helped ground me in helping my son is the post Vietnam War era PTSD knowledge and research.The last part of the book dealing with genetics and supplementation, I have no knowledge of. I would strongly urge the drug company's to focus on cheaper anti-psychotic injectables. The future is bright. Thanks Diane !
If you’ve walked this road with a loved one, you’ll recognize it. It triggers difficult memories and reminds you of the compassion you’ve developed for others who are on a similar journey. Reading it knowing it ends well makes it possible to dive in to these memories. And know that it brings hope.If you are part of the medical community, read this book.If you have not experienced this pain, please still consider reading it. You’ll be a better person: a better friend to those walking this road, and better equipped should you or a loved one enter this path.
I could relate to this story from the vantage point of working with the chronically mentally ill and the ongoing challenge and frustration with our system to provide adequate care. I recommend this to all who work with these families and clients. I am just learning about the methylation process and this confirmed what I have begun to learn. I highly recommend this book.
This is an amazing story of the incredible pain and stunning recovery of a paranoid schizophrenic and a Mother who would not give up. God bless you Diane for sharing your story to give others hope and a path forward.
