I absolutely loved ‘50 Wacky Things Humans Do: Weird & amazing facts about the human body!’ so naturally I wanted to read about wacky pets as well.With information ranging from gross (toads eat the skin they shed) to amazing (salamanders can breathe and drink through their skin) this book provides interesting facts and theories about various furry, feathered and scaly pets.I think the writing style would be engaging for kids and the bite sized chunks of information get the point across without getting into information overload territory. While I already knew some of the facts, others were new to me. Then there were those that I wasn’t sure if I already knew or not but still found fascinating, including the potential for rabbits to get cavities from eating carrots.A couple of my favourites facts were:“Goldfish use teeth in their throats to crush their food. They don’t have stomachs. Instead they break up food and absorb nutrients in their intestines.â€â€œChameleon eyes can move independently, so they can look in two different directions at once.â€Marta Sorte’s illustrations are so cute! My favourites were the dancing ferret and the baby seahorse getting ready to chow down.There were a few instances in this book where the answer to why animals do a certain behaviour was that we really don’t know or that it may be because of one of several possible reasons. I found this frustrating but other readers probably wouldn’t.I enjoyed this read and would happily reread it. Overall though, I preferred ‘50 Wacky Things Humans Do’.Thank you to NetGalley and Walter Foster, Jr., an imprint of Quarto Publishing Group, for the opportunity to read this book.
A survey of fifty things that pets do which may make their human owners chuckle or scratch their heads, but have a perfectly reasonable explanation from the pet’s perspective.With attractive cartoon illustrations and a wide array of pets represented, young animal lovers should eat this up. It is actually a really good resource for pet owners as curious behaviors are explained and tips for how best to care for a wide variety of pets are given. Highly recommended for a family considering getting a pet. Which strange pet behavior can you put up with best? 50 Wacky Things Pets Do is an interesting book for children. The trivia in the book is intriguing, and there are plenty of fun illustrations to break up the text. I think this book would be particularly good for reluctant readers due to the small sections of text, pictures, and kid-friendly subject matter. Kids will also love that a wide variety of pets are covered. What a fun book!I received an advance reading copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This is such an appealing book! Children who love their pets, and animals in general, will enjoy the short entries that explain why animals do the things that they do. There are entries about cats, dogs, horses, pigs, ferret...snakes. You get the idea. The illustrations are bright and appealing. This is a book that a child can read alone but that adults will also enjoy. I kept shouting out facts to my husband as I read this and I am about as adult as I ever will be!
Such a fun book for kids who love animals, with endearing illustrations, little known intriguing facts and a respectful stance toward our furry, feathered, scaly co-inhabitants on the earth.
