There have plenty of big, newsy books published this fall, but the one I have found most revelatory is Ralph Savarese’s "See It Feelingly: Classic Novels, Autistic Readers, and the Schooling of a No-Good English Professor." A poet, literary critic, and activist, Savarese recounts his experience discussing classic works of American Literature with autistic readers. Covering such works as "Moby-Dick," "Ceremony," and "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," the book explodes the myth that autistic individuals have difficulty engaging in the imaginative play necessary to understand literature. What Savarese and his autistic collaborators show is how profoundly complex the mind can be and how much we have to learn from the neurologically diverse. I’ve treasured these novels and stories for years, but reading Savarese’s brilliant book, I felt as if I were seeing them with new and improved eyes. “Harpooners like me chase whales,” one reader says, “hoping to catch the perfect whale in the shape of literature.” A memoir that effortlessly (and humorously!) incorporates brain science, literary criticism, and political reflection, "See It Feelingly" demonstrates the way that neurodiversity is no different than other forms of diversity: it has the capacity to enrich all of our lives. I read this book hoping to find out more about the concept of “Neurodiversity”, but I did not expect that all my assumptions would be profoundly reshaped. The book not only debunks many of the stereotypes of autism—the inability to understand figurative language, or to engage in Theory of Mind; the difficulty in experiencing complex emotions and empathy. In fact, Savarese’s autistic “partners in crime” prove to be perceptive and imaginative readers, as their insights on Moby-Dick, Huckleberry Finn, Ceremony, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and The Heart is a Lonely Huntershow. But, more importantly, in its pages the idea of neurodiversity becomes fundamentally dynamic and fluid—as fluid as the sea that gives the first chapter its title—through the readings, personalities, and histories of the six men and woman who embark with the author in such an uncharted voyage. Highly informative of the science of autism, its beautiful and compelling prose conveys the author’s own voyage of discovery; the revision of his own assumptions (his “schooling,” as he puts it) in his literary and personal conversations with his associates. Beware: this book may change your way of looking at difference for ever.
