I purchased this book as a starting point for research into Cherokee basketry. The author presents information exactly as the book's description states, covering numerous technical and cultural aspects of basketry. I was thankful for the stories of some of the women and men who helped keep Cherokee basketry alive in spite of everything the Cherokees have faced (also a topic which the author overviews). It's a fast and easy read, and includes a variety of pictures and examples. As an needlecraft enthusiast, I was particularly pleased to discover charted patterns of some designs.The reason I give it only four stars is that the presentation is somewhat repetitive, with several occurrences of nearly the same exact information. This information is of course important; but having read it once, I wished the space could have been devoted to new information.Although brief, the book is enough to make me want to dig deeper into the Cherokee and basketry cultures. This is a good introduction and overview.
I was just fascinated by the short biographies on these most talented individuals.This book truly expresses the work and history of the Cherokee artisans. It givesthe reader a glimpse of what it means to be a Native American and has wonderfulpictures to go along with the stories. I liked it so much,, I bought more than onecopy to give to a relative who is a Cherokee. He knew many of the subjects and hadseen their work in local shops. He also felt that the book was well written andaccurate. I highly recommend this book to all who study Native American Culture.
the book is well researched and informative. it has some good information you may not find anywhere else. It will serve as a good source of inspiration, but it is not a "how to weave baskets" book. It covers more about how they did things and why. Well worth it.
This is a well-written book on the specific basketry styles used by the Cherokee, both historically and present-day. It is well illustrated and describes exact materials used. I have found it a valuable reference source, as I am learning Cherokee-specific basket-weaving.
An important addition to my collection of book on Native American Basketmakers.
A beautiful and very informative book. It has lots of great pictures, but the text is worth even more. I've been inspired to actually learn to make baskets myself.
